Congratulations!

On behalf of the Church Board Nominating Committee, I would like to congratulate you on being selected as a nominee for the 2026-2027 Church Board! A council of your peers has prayerfully affirmed that you possess the wisdom and spiritual maturity necessary to serve at the highest level of leadership at our church. Whether or not you choose to accept this nomination, I hope that you are encouraged by this endorsement of your faith and character.

The Church Board is the chief governing body in the local church. Board Members serve as the principal advisors to the Lead Pastor and provide a crucial layer of accountability. They protect the mission and vision of the Church by ensuring that our resources (people, money, and buildings) are properly directed toward our stated goals. Additionally, Board Members help develop the next generation of leaders by lending guidance and support to our various Ministry Teams and occasional ad-hoc committees.

Board Members are asked to make the following commitments:
  1. Serve a one-year term (April 1, 2026 – March 31, 2027).
  2. Attend Board Meetings on the second Monday or Tuesday evening of each month (usually 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm, 9pm the latest)
  3. Meet with Ministry Team Leads and ad-hoc committees on an as-needed basis.
  4. Support the church’s ministry through regular worship attendance and financial giving.

Strong lay leadership has been essential to the advancement of God’s kingdom since the very first days of the church. As the Apostle Paul wrote, “We all have different gifts, according to the grace given us...If a person’s gift is leadership, let him govern diligently” (Romans 12:6-8).

With your permission, we would like to include your name on the Church Board Ballot at our Annual Church Elections on March 8. Would you please bring this matter before the Lord in prayer and let me know of your decision before March 5? If I can aid you in coming to a decision, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Below you may find the role, qualifications, and key skills of a Church Board Member.
The Role of a Church Board Member
A member of the Church Board participates in the governance and direction of New Heights Church of the Nazarene and its overall ministry. Board members meet on a monthly basis (one 2-3 hour meeting) to uphold the mission of New Heights, oversee the ministry direction of the church and its members, and ensure the provision of resources to carry out the church’s work.

The Church Board has five key areas of responsibility:
  1. Compliance with doctrinal and denominational standards, and legal and tax compliance with federal, state and local requirements as a religious non-profit in the state of California.
  2. Development of long-term ministry strategies and relevant outcomes as the strategies are implemented.
  3. Provision of financial oversight on church income and expenses, development of an annual fiscal year budget, reduction of the church’s risk and liability, support of financial giving programs, and oversight of periodic certified independent audits for the church.
  4. Oversight of the work of the lead pastor, conduct of an annual pastoral performance evaluation, and annual review of the senior pastor’s financial package. The Church Board also provides direction for the church in an interim period should the senior pastor position be open.
  5. Provision of ongoing guidance, prayer, and support to the staff and lay leadership of the various ministries established by the church.

The Church Board of New Heights provides an ongoing presence of leadership in ministry to fulfill God’s call in the community.
